Colorado Home Trends for 2016

9News recently featured Colorado Homes and Lifestyles Magazines editor at large Rebecca Gart She said that, “2016 is the year of simplicity and elegance for home design in Colorado”.  According to Rebecca Gart, here’s what’s trending in homes across the state:

1. Mixed lighting

In the kitchen featured on the January 2016 cover, you’ll notice industrial lighting over the island and an elegant chandelier in the dining room. “You don’t have to redo your whole kitchen, you can just redo the lighting and mixed lighting is very on trend,” Gart says. A change in lighting fixtures can make a big difference in your home.

2. Unplugged family rooms

Television is no longer the center of the home (The kitchen is, says Gart). The giant television set is becoming obselete, replaced by handheld tablets and devices. More people are opting for a quiet space that is relaxed and casual, perhaps filled with a sectional sofa perfect for laying on and relaxing. Large, open spaces have intimate areas for gathering with family and friends and playing games or chatting.

3. Dramatic wall coverings

Making Big Use of Small Spaces

Making Use of Small Spaces

Interior Designer Katherine Speas was interviewed for the following article written by Kim Cook.  Making Use of Small Spaces was published in The Colorado Springs Gazette’s – Home and Garden Section on Saturday, July 5, 2014.

For many young people, a first apartment might be a cramped studio or a bedroom in a shared living arrangement. Juggling that room’s living, dining and sleeping spaces requires creativity.

Simple design can make small chic – and livable, said Kathy Speas, owner of Speas Interior Design. The clean, spare lines of minimalist design could be just the ticket.

“Keep clutter to a minimum because if you have a bunch of little things everywhere, it’ll feel cluttered, small,” said Speas, who has decorated Colorado Springs interiors for 30 years.

A few good rules of thumb from Speas:

What is Universal Design

July 1, 2014

What is Universal Design?

Universal Design means creating a stylish space that everyone can live in.  The idea is to design a home that fits everyone’s need regardless of age, size, ability.  With age our ability and agility changes and often we find our home no longer suits our needs.  In the past this meant making changes that did not flow with the current design and stuck out as sterile and obvious.  Today, Universal Design means beauty and style is no longer compromised for comfort.  In fact, one would not realize they are in a home with Universal Design features unless they were pointed out to them.

What are universal Design Features?
