Crafting One-Of-A-Kind Interiors: Our Customization Process

At Speas Interior Design, we believe your home should be a perfect reflection of you and your family. While trends come and go, a truly timeless space is born from a deeply personalized design process—one that prioritizes your story, your lifestyle, and the unique character of your home. Customization isn’t just a service we offer; it’s the very heart of our philosophy.

Let’s pull back the curtain on our design approach by revisiting one of our favorite projects, Going Daisies for Colorado. This sanctuary for a devoted daisy lover exemplifies how we transform individual inspiration and unexpected challenges into a cohesive, one-of-a-kind interior.

Collaboration is Key

Our process begins with a conversation. We listen intently to understand your dreams, daily routines, and the emotions you want to feel in your space. This foundational collaboration ensures every decision, from the layout to the smallest detail, is intentional and personal.

We don’t design over our clients. We excel at making personal choices that appeal to our clients.

The “Going Daisies” project was a beautiful example of this partnership. Our client desired a main-level refresh that blended Colorado’s rustic essence with her floral-inspired style. This clear vision became our guide for inspired design, allowing us to make bold, custom choices that walked the delicate line between rustic masculine and refined feminine.

Weaving Personal History into Interior Designs for Homes

A custom home is one that tells your story. We love incorporating elements that hold sentimental value, ensuring your space maintains meaning as well as function and beauty. To honor our client’s passion for daisies, we used daisy motifs as a personalized thread running throughout the home.

We sourced two different kinds of daisy tiles to provide contrast and depth to the design. Then, we strategically placed them in a few key points, including a unique touch on the stair risers to tie the main living spaces into her private suite. This intentional touch creates a subtle, joyful journey through the home.

Another standout moment in the Primary Bath was incorporating an heirloom chandelier from our client’s mother’s home. We positioned this cherished piece over the standalone tub to create a focal point rich with family history. This honored the beautiful object and the owner’s connection to their family.

Creative Problem-Solving for Better Function

Every home that we design presents its own set of architectural opportunities and challenges. Our expertise is thinking through these opportunities and finding innovative solutions that enhance the space and its functionality.

In the kitchen, we designed a custom banquette to maximize seating and comfort in the breakfast nook. This built-in solution provided a cozy, efficient dining area for up to six, perfectly tailored to the room’s dimensions and the family’s needs.

During the remodel, we had the challenge of repurposing a stone planter that felt out of place. Instead of removing it, we saw an opportunity. We converted the stone planter into a stylish dry bar, carefully matching the existing stone to make it look like it was always intended to be there. This clever pivot added function and preserved the home’s character.

Embracing the Unexpected, or “Embracing the Beam”

Sometimes, the most memorable design features are born from the challenges we didn’t anticipate. Rather than seeing constraints as obstacles, we embrace them as chances to innovate.

During demo, we uncovered an ugly structural beam that couldn’t be moved. Instead of trying to hide it, we embraced the beam. We encapsulated it with an intentional beam surround, transforming an eyesore into a celebrated design feature that now adds character and warmth to the room.

Another design goal was to achieve a true barnwood feel in the shower. To accomplish this, we chose to mix three different wood-look tiles. The tiles were all different thicknesses (much to our tile setter’s dismay) but this was a solution that would enhance and recreate the authentic rustic uneven texture of real wood even more. The result is a shower with unparalleled character and charm—even if it takes a little extra work to achieve.
