As an interior designer, one of the questions I hear most often from friends, family, clients, and casual acquaintances is “Oh, I bet your home is just beautiful – what’s you favorite room in your house?”
So this month, I thought I would take you on a tour of our home and share why each room is a favorite room in our home!
As many of you know, my husband of twenty plus years, Andy SIkora, is a true craftsman. Not only is Andy a licensed building contractor and a licensed master plumber, he’s a skilled ironworks artist!
Several years ago, we decided it was time to remodel (yet again) our 1980s eco-chic contemporary home in Colorado Springs. This time the project took a different twist by adding a additional square footage with a second story addition above our garage that would house the design offices of Sikora and Speas.
Our design studio is one of my favorite spaces in our home. As a new addition to our home, we embraced this space as an opportunity to totally design and showcase our passion for building design, interior design, and new construction.
The room, decorated in a contemporary Colorado lodge style, functions as the “command center” of Sikora and Speas! But, it can easily transition into a separate living area for a multi-generational family or living quarters for household staff as it features public and private spaces, a kitchenette, a bathroom, and outdoor living.
Reasons I love this room
The heart of this area is the family room which brings the outdoors in with solid pine and iron beams, a dry stacked (no mortar) Telluride stone fireplace (heavenly on
snowy Colorado afternoon) with a custom concrete and iron mantle and hearth, hand-scraped hickory floors, Sun Mountain knotty Alder doors, and custom Anderson sliding doors with cherry surround that open to a curved balcony with custom iron rails by (of course) Andy Sikora!
Let’s face it, most women don’t like seeing the TV when we walk in a room. But, the all-important men in our lives love their televisions! The non-focal, focal point of this room has to be the custom designed and fabricated TV lift that with the push of a button raises (or lowers) our TV so that it disappears into the dry stack fireplace in seconds!
From a design perspective, every home needs a focal point. Both Andy and I love the custom designed and fabricated coffee table in our family room. Andy painstakingly made this log
table from damaged ponderosa pine from the Hayman Fire and custom ironwork.
The furniture in the design studio is a combination of warm earth colors and assorted textures of leather and upholstery. While the look is eclectic, the comfy style is consistent. The room is pulled together with a colorful geometric pattern.
Who says a bathroom can’t be a work of art. The ¾ bath with walk-in shower was a blast and a challenge for Andy and I to complete! Not only am I proud to say I did
the custom tile and installation, the ironwork is again Andy’s handiwork! Highlights of this stylish bathroom include Sikora Creations’ freeform copper light fixtures and iron countertop with chiseled edge on a converted custom cabinet, metallic faux finish walls, and floors of hand broken and honed Travertine tile. This bath also features a bronze vessel sink by Wawirka – one of my favorite artists to use for conversation worthy sinks and more!
Functionality is critical when creating a shared work environment at home. Both Andy and I have plenty of personal workspace with handcrafted
desks with granite countertops, built in shelves and cabinetry, and all the latest technology to make our business run smoothly!
Yes, the space was designed so that Andy and I could showcase our abilities, but it was also created to give our clients a homelike environment to meet with us and make decisions and selections in warm and cozy atmosphere.
