Furnishing Your Home With Speas Interior Design

If you have found your dream home and don’t know where to start with furnishing it, or if you’d rather start with an interior redesign without committing to a full remodel or a major construction project, there’s a lower-risk way to make a home feel refreshed: the furnishings.

New furniture, rugs, window treatments, and art can change how your Colorado home looks and feels—without the long timelines, costs, or disruption of construction.

At Speas Interior Design, we approach an interior refresh the way we approach any project: we listen to how you live first, then we curate and source pieces and finishes especially for your space.

We’ve written before about why working with an interior designer is worth it in general. Here’s why it matters even more when new furnishings are your primary goal.

Furnishing Your Home Should Start With A Plan

In new construction, your furniture layout may inform real construction decisions: where floor outlets make sense over wall outlets, or placing light fixtures so a chandelier centers over the dining table, and arranging rooms to work around the many different ways you may want to watch TV—without it becoming the focus of the space. In a Colorado home built around its views, that could mean orienting seating for TV and a mountain view. A floor plan allows us to better coordinate with trade professionals like your electrician and other contractors before the walls close up. We catalogue your heirloom or existing furnishings and plan which new additions you need and translate all of it into a complete furniture plan.

If you’re looking to refresh your current residence, the benefits are much the same, but with an advantage: you already know how you want to live there. Homeowners often come to us when their needs have shifted and they want their home to shift with them—by furnishing their home to grow with a young family, or by reworking the layout as a family home becomes an entertaining space after the kids have moved out. A refresh is an excellent opportunity to replace furniture that you loved for decades with new pieces meant to last just as long. The goal is to create a plan based around how you live now, not how the room was arranged years ago.

Building a furniture plan usually looks like this

  • We meet you in your space—or, for new construction, work from your architectural plans.
  • We measure and catalog the room and furniture you’re keeping, noting the pieces you want in specific spots and where you’re open to suggestions.
  • We create multiple furniture floor-plan options showing how the space could be arranged and what fits where.
  • We refine your favorite option—or choose the best elements of each option—into a final plan.

Exclusive Access to Showrooms for Every Space

As design professionals, we bring our understanding of high-quality furnishings and a portfolio of showroom options to fit every style, need, and budget—so your investment goes to where it makes the most sense for each design.

  • Premium furnishing retailers like Arhaus offer high-quality ready-made options at a variety of price points. Perfect for secondary areas of the home, they carry offerings with complementary finishes and fabric selections—a great source for quality upholstery and case goods—but not as many options as designer showrooms.
  • Designer showrooms offer more customizability with thousands of different fabrics and material selections, so finding the perfect match is far more likely. An excellent benefit of designer showrooms is that we can order individual pieces custom-fit to your specifications. If you fall in love with a sofa but it needs to be six inches narrower to fit your room, that’s something we can do through designer lines.
  • Custom and artisan-made: When you must have a one-of-a-kind piece—or simply can’t find exactly what you want in the retail space—we work directly with skilled artisans and custom furniture makers. These professionals and artists can build almost anything we can dream up.

Behind the Scenes of a Residential Interior Furniture Project

A good refresh is a partnership with a clear division of labor: you share your vision and set the budget, and we make it happen without you having to manage the project. From here, we become the single point of contact for all that happens behind the scenes—placing and tracking every order, watching lead times, scheduling freight and white-glove delivery, inspecting each piece before it reaches you, and steering your budget so it lands where it matters and stays clear of the costly ordering mistakes most homeowners don’t see coming. It’s the heart of our project management work.

A single room can mean orders placed with a dozen different vendors, each on its own lead time, freight schedule, and delivery window. Deliveries and trades have to be timed so nothing shows up too early or holds up the room. Left to the homeowner, all of the logistics becomes a second job—and when you work with Speas Interior Design, it becomes our job instead.

From ordering wallcoverings, sourcing furniture, hanging window treatments, and placing each final accessory, we pull the room together at once so you get the enjoyment of a truly finished space—and we absorb the time, money, and sanity a project like this would otherwise cost you. In other words, we design and organize the logistics, so you get the whole space transformed without the stress—saving you the time, money, and sanity of juggling complex logistics.
