Hard treatments solve problems. Soft treatments finish rooms. Fabric at the window softens the hard edge where wall meets glass. It absorbs sound in rooms that echo—a real consideration in the tall great rooms and open plans so common in our Colorado homes. It introduces color and texture at eye level, framing a view rather than competing with it. And hung well, drapes and panels lend height and grandeur: a drapery mounted high can make a nine-foot window feel like eleven.
Fabric treatments also provide a practical touch at altitude. Where light is intense, and temperature swings are dramatic, the right fabric and lining temper the glare, protect furnishings and floors from UV damage, and add a layer of insulation against a morning that starts cold and turns warm by noon.
A Short Vocabulary of Soft Treatments
A few of the pieces we reach for most:
- Stationary side panels: Fabric that doesn’t move—instead, side panels frame a window at the edges without drawing closed.
- Drapery: Full panels that traverse from side to side, for control and coverage.
- Cornices: A structured, upholstered treatment that conceals hardware, adds architectural weight, and can visually raise a ceiling or unify a run of mismatched windows.
- Valances: A lighter fabric treatment that gives a finished, softened edge without the structure of a cornice.
- Swags and cascades: Soft fabric draped across the top of a window with tails waterfalling at the sides—the most romantic of the top treatments.

- The base layer: A shutter, shade, or blind is the hardworking base, and often the foundation the softer layers are built on top of.
- The soft layer: This is where drapery or stationary side panels frame a window or traverse for real light control.
- The top layer: A structured, upholstered cornice, a lighter valance, or a draped swag with cascades gives a window romance and height, conceals the hardware, and can unify windows or make a ceiling feel taller.
Not every room or window needs every layer. Part of the design process is deciding which option best suits the space to be both beautiful and genuinely functional.
