Meet Courtney Sikora, Owner and Principal Designer

Some may say that the art and business of design has always been in Courtney Sikora’s blood. In 1982, Speas Interior Design was founded by Courtney’s proud mom and renowned Colorado designer, Kathy Speas. For over 30 years, Kathy provided personal and unique designs to clients in the Colorado Springs area before passing the business onto Courtney in 2022. Now in the position of Founder, Kathy provides some guidance and support to the business, and enjoys her time hiking, traveling, and nurturing her garden while also passing on her legacy.

Courtney Sikora, Owner and Principal Designer of Speas Interior Design at Speas Interior Design near Colorado Springs, CO.

During her senior year of high school, when Courtney Sikora was starting her journey of what to major in, she thought she may want to study archeology or psychology and move away from the family business of Interior Design. After taking a few introductory courses in psychology and anthropology at Pikes Peak State College and University of Colorado – Colorado Springs, she enrolled in an Introduction to Interior Design class at Pikes Peak State College and quickly realized that was more up her alley, setting the stage for her future at Colorado State University [one of the only programs in the country accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA)].

“It was like, ‘Okay, maybe this is my calling,’” Courtney admits, the knowing smile lighting her face. “Thanks, Mom!”

Outside of being involved in the family business, it wasn’t 100% chance that interior design happened to click for Courtney Sikora. Growing up, she used to let her imagination run wild during family road trips, allowing her time to dream up future houses or redesign places she’d recently been inside.

Once Courtney joined the family business in 2017 with her Bachelor of Science in Interior Design in from Colorado State, she quickly brought her unique research-driven methodology of tackling design problems to the business.

“We start each project with the big picture in mind—like, what is your absolute dream?” Courtney asks. “A lot of times, dreams are more obtainable than we think they are.”

After a consultation call, Courtney and the Speas team like to see the existing space to get a better understanding of the scope of each project to better understand the needs of the client and the structure they’re working with. Then, with the use of 2D and 3D schematic drawings, Courtney starts the design process that ultimately results in a completed design.

“We can make it obtainable,” Courtney says, “But we have to start with that big-picture dream. Once we get our plans locked in, we can start getting into selections.”

When it comes to selecting interior finishes or defining one’s interior design style, Courtney Sikora is not a believer in hard or fast rules. Where many interior designers attempt to mold potential clients into some ideal look or feel, instead, at Speas Interior Design, Courtney’s focus is much more client oriented.

“Our style is more about how we present projects to the client, how we put together drawings,” she says. If you flip through the Speas Interior Design portfolio, you can find a wide variety of different interior design styles for this reason.

Courtney agrees. “It’s about what the client wants—how can I create a space that speaks their voice?”
