Combining Window Treatments for a Unique Look

Are you unable to decide between traditional curtains or drapes and blinds? What about shutters?  Why not choose more than one? All window treatments have their pros and cons, and many can be used in the same room. They can even be combined on the same window. At Speas Interior Design, we carry premium Hunter Douglas window treatments, and we’d love to show you how to combine some of these to create a unique look in your home.

Mixing it Up

You don’t have to use the same window treatments throughout your entire home. In fact, you will likely run into obstacles as different rooms have different decor styles and purposes. You may want your bedroom to be cozy and dark, while your living areas to be light and airy. If you’re having trouble deciding on what to put where you can use window sizes as a guide. Pair curtains and another treatment on small or medium windows and use only curtains or vertical blinds on large windows.

Hang Every Treatment at the Same Height

In rooms where you are mixing treatment styles on different windows, be sure that all window coverings are hung at the same height. Having different heights of window treatments in a room will make it look lopsided and awkward. Use the height of the highest window as your guide and hang all treatments at that height, regardless of where the actual frame is.

Choosing a Color Scheme

Another way to have more than one style of window treatment sharing a space is to coordinate an appealing color scheme. We have put together a few suggestions to help you get started.

  • Use the wall color. You can do this by choosing a pattern which has the wall color or use the same shade to blend the wall and window treatments. This will give your room the illusion of more space.
  • Go for a monochromatic scheme. Using the same color but in dramatically different shades, sky blue with navy, is an easy way to mix up your window treatments but have it be a cohesive look.
  • Neutrals are another great option. Far from boring, neutrals work well with each other, and with other colors. Neutrals can also help to tone down very bold shades. Pro tip: use several shades of neutral to avoid having a stark look in the room.

Using Multiple Prints

It is possible to use more than one pattern or print in a room if you get it right. If you get it wrong, it will be overwhelming and unattractive.

  • While much of this is personal and subjective, one tip is to try patterns of different scale – one larger print and one smaller print – in similar tones. Try to use at least three patterns on varied scales. The same two prints over and over will be underwhelming. Remember, if you get it right it can look great, but if you get it wrong…
  • Another tip is, if you want to have two treatments on a window, and only one to have a print, go with the curtains or outside treatment. Shades with prints aren’t viewable when raised, whereas you can always see curtains.
  • Decide what look you are going for. Do you want florals, stripes, or animal prints? Are you hoping for a feminine vibe or an exotic style? Knowing this ahead of time will help you out a lot when it is time to purchase.
  • Break up patterns with solids. If you have several windows in a room, more than a few patterns will make the room feel chaotic.
  • Do not mix colors too far from each other. For example, pastels and bright jewel tones will come together in a displeasing way. Stay within the same hue or intensity.
  • Be sure to distribute patterns throughout your room. You don’t want one side to be dominated by prints while the opposite side looks bare.
  • You do not need to have different colors for different patterns. A tone-on-tone look can be very elegant. Also, a pattern can be as simple as a change in texture such as a wood grain on blinds.
